2 2 Fa l l | W i n t e r B R I DE Kate and Matt know a thing or two about destiny. They frst met on Halloween when Kate was dressed as Cruella de Vil. They exchanged phone numbers, but nothing came of it. Sometime later, a mutual friend set them up on a date. "When she introduced us, I was like, 'This was totally meant to be,'" Kate says. The two went on their frst date in Janu- ary 2008. A week later at dinner, Kate knew Matt was the one. "I just looked at him and thought, 'I want to marry you,'" she says. "I don't even know you and I love you." Matt, who works in operations in the U.S. Army, is "quite the planner," Kate says. One weekend, she few to Colorado to visit her friends from nursing school. Matt few to Kentucky just to ask Kate's dad for her hand before fying to Colorado to surprise Kate at a park where he had her friends take her. "'He's kind of cute,'" she recalls thinking about a stranger in the distance. "I walked closer and saw that it was Matt!" In planning their wedding, the couple tried to mix the things that are important to them. They decided to host the wedding in Louisville, incorporating blue, icy accents from Colorado into the festivities. "Lou- isville is our beginning," Kate says. "Colorado was the next chapter." With the lighted garlands, bright red bows and crystal and blue accents, "it was everything I wanted it to be," she says. "I think it was almost better than I imagined." Despite the beauty of the ceremony and the reception, the newlyweds' favorite part of the day was their "frst look." Though more traditional couples consider it to be bad luck, Kate and Matt loved the 20 minutes they spent together before the ceremony. "There was no pressure," she says. "We had time to 'ooh' and 'ahh' over each other." Spinning around, Kate showed Matt the details in her dress, and she got to see his uniform. Kate says, "Allow all those months of hard work to be appreciated." December 28, 2013 Kate Purcell and Matt Cannon orces ate F F of Local Weddings 1-45 edit.indd 22 6/16/14 3:51 PM
